A Day At The Motocross Races

posted on 29 January 2012

It’s a surprise she said as we drove along the Northampton road early on Saturday morning. Its best that we arrive early so we can soak up the atmosphere she added. We drove through the entrance and I realised at once that I was in for a real treat, she had two tickets for a motocross event. The first thing I noticed was the smell of oil as we headed for the tented pit area then some of the bikes fired their bikes into life and the noise was deafening. The riders with their brightly endorsed leathers, helmets and motocross goggles were a sight to behold as we passed slowly through the throng soaking up the atmosphere. We then headed towards an area of the track where we would be able to witness three hazard points. Finding a good location we settled down to await the first race which was due off in a few minutes. From our vantage point we saw the starter raise his flag, riders crouched low on their machines engines revved, the tape flew away, the riders were off, all twenty two of them and heading in our direction. The bunch narrowed as they approached the first corner, two riders went down as they approached the bend. Now they were heading directly towards and the noise increased as they picked up speed then quickly it subsided as they braked for the hazards. Another two riders lost control as they hit a massive ditch before the rest of the bunch were through, one of the fallen riders managed to remount and began to chase after the rest. I stood speechless as they disappeared monumentally from view this was just the first lap of twelve in the first race and with another five to follow, some of differing classes, I knew I was going to have a very exciting day.
